Curriculum
Categorical PGY-1’s get a balanced experience by rotating through the Medicine Wards, ICU, Neurology service, and Harbor-UCLA Medicine Wards. Additionally, approximately 2 months are dedicated to a combination of ER and continuity clinics.

Curriculum
On Medicine Wards at SMMC, interns take call every 4th day until 8:30 pm. Both categorical and preliminary interns rotate on night float for 2 weeks at a time, working from 8:30 pm-7:30 am with Friday and Saturday off, and return on Sunday night at 8:30 pm. ER, neurology, and clinic rotations are call-free with weekends off.
On Medicine Wards at Harbor-UCLA, interns take call every 5th night, admitting until midnight, and cross-covering until morning.
In the ICU, preliminary and categorical interns take overnight call every 4th night.
***We are aware of the new ACGME rules effective July 1, 2011 with regards to duty hours for interns and residents stating that interns are required not to exceed 16 hours of on-call duties and residents are not to exceed 24 hours. As a result, the above schedules will be changed to comply with the new rules. Please check back for updates.***
Categorical PGY-2/PGY-3’s 2010-2011
3 blocks Medicine Wards each year
3 blocks ICU distributed during the 2 years
1 block continuity clinic each year
1 block of SMMC Cardiology each year
2-4 weeks of night float each year
1 block of Ambulatory each year (consists of Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Ophthalmology, Adolescent Medicine, Allergy/Immunology, HIV, Sports Medicine, and Gynecology)
1 block of Geriatrics during PGY3 year
5-6 blocks Harbor Subspecialty (Cardiology, Hematology-Oncology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, General Medicine Consult, and Pulmonary) during the 2 years
1 elective block during the 2 years
3 weeks vacation each year
