St. Mary Internal Medicine Residency is proud to offer the very best of academic and community medicine to its 36 trainees. In addition to a three years categorical program, we have 3 years primary care track and a one year preliminary medicine training track. All of our teaching faculty have or will have academic appointments through the Charles R. Drew University School of Medicine and we maintain close ties with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a busy county medical facility in nearby Torrance.
Residents benefit from “real world medicine” training during their core rotations at St. Mary Medical Center, a 400-bed acute care facility and level 2 trauma center. Located in downtown Long Beach, St. Mary is a member of Dignity Health, which is the largest hospital network in California. In addition to honing clinical skills, residents learn practice management skills from practicing private attendings. Core faculty, whose sole focus is teaching, patient care and research, keep the quality of education and resident well-being at the highest possible levels. Long Beach is the fifth largest city in California, and its patients provide exposure to everyday medical problems and come from all walks of life. Our exceptionally diverse community includes a large proportion of Southeast Asians and Spanish speakers, all of whom are represented among the patient census.
This foundation is rounded out with rotations to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a 500-bed county hospital about 10 minutes away from our home base at St. Mary. Harbor boasts an exceptional academic and research program. After up to one month on Harbor wards as a PGY-1 AND senior residents complete about 9-12 months of subspecialty rotations there. Our residents experience the very best that Harbor has to offer: an unmatched spectrum of pathology, cutting edge research, and top notch teaching.
With our balance in academic and community medicine, teaching and hands-on experience, hard work and time to play, the St. Mary Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency offers complete training for the resident who wants to be prepared for any career in medicine.
